Is Breast Reconstruction for You?

When facing mastectomy, a woman must make the very personal decision of whether or not to undergo breast reconstruction. A woman can undergo breast reconstruction at the time of her mastectomy, or at any point afterwards. Every woman deserves to make her own choice after being presented with all of the information. For women who choose to have their breast(s) reconstructed, the procedure can:

  • Restore natural breast appearance
  • Alleviate physical reminders of the cancer
  • Enhance body image and self-esteem
  • Improve symmetry between the breasts

While there are several benefits to breast reconstruction, Dr. Clark understands that the choice is up to you. If you decide to proceed with breast reconstruction, Dr. Clark will consult with you to determine which method of reconstruction will help achieve your goals.

Breast Reconstruction Explained

At our Sacramento practice, breast reconstruction is performed using tissue expansion method.

Tissue Expansion

The use of a tissue expander creates a pocket beneath the pectoral muscle, which can gradually be expanded to accommodate a breast implant. After a mastectomy, there may not be sufficient tissue to cover a breast implant. The tissue expander allows Dr. Clark to expand the skin and remaining tissue gradually over time, and to eventually replace the expander with the appropriately sized breast implant. The nipple and areola are repositioned or re-created accordingly.

Recovery and Results

Depending on your method of breast reconstruction, recovery and results may vary. Healing may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on which method of breast reconstruction you choose, as well as other health considerations.
